Root Canal Treatment Melbourne

ENDODONTIC TOOTH CARE

Root canal

Root canal treatment (endodontic treatment) removes a tooth’s damaged or infected pulp or nerve. Once removed, the root canal pulp is cleaned, shaped, filled and sealed. If damaged, infected or dead pulp is left untreated, pus can build up at the root tip in the jawbone, forming an abscess. An abscess can destroy the surrounding bone and cause acute pain.

Years ago, teeth with diseased or injured pulps were removed entirely. Root canal treatment has saved many teeth that would otherwise be lost. It is important to seek treatment for your tooth as soon as possible with a professional dentist. MC Dental have 6 locations open 7 days a week.

Common causes of damaged or infected tooth pulp

The most common causes of damaged or dead pulp include a crack in the tooth, a naturally deep tooth cavity or an injury to a tooth (such as a severe knock to the tooth – either recent or in the past). Severe or untreated dental decay, advanced gum disease and chronic tooth grinding (bruxism) could also lead to damaged or infected tooth pulp.

Steps involved in root canal treatment

  • Your dentist will examine and take a radiograph (x-ray) to assess the tooth. The dentist will anaesthetise the tooth if the tooth is suitable for root canal treatment.
  • An opening is made through the crown of the tooth into the pulp. The dentist will use small fine instruments (known as files) to remove the infected/inflamed pulp.
  • The files will further shape and prepare the pulp chamber and root canals for filling. At the same time, the dentist will also use an antibacterial solution to irrigate the pulp chamber and root canals.
  • Once the space is prepared and cleaned, the dentist will use a rubber-like filling (known as “gutta-percha”) to fill the root canal spaces. The canals will be filled with gutta-percha and adhesive cement to seal the spaces completely.
  • Once the root canal therapy is completed, the dentist will either place a crown or restoration over the tooth, depending on the tooth’s condition. This will protect and restore the tooth to its full function and aesthetics.
  • Root canal treatment consists of several care steps, so we recommend 2 to 3 appointments to complete a root canal.

Endodontic treatment (root canal) in Melbourne – common questions and FAQs

How much does a root canal cost in Melbourne?

The cost of a root canal in Melbourne can vary based on several factors, for example: the severity of the patient’s condition, the complexity of the procedure, the dental office, and if the patient has dental insurance to cover partial of the cost. On average, you can expect a root canal treatment in Melbourne to cost around $1,000 to $2,000 per tooth.

Is it better to pull a tooth or get a root canal?

Deciding between extracting a tooth or getting a root canal treatment depends on various factors, including the specific condition of the infected tooth, overall oral health, and individual circumstances. In most cases, preserving natural teeth through root canal treatment is considered the preferred option by many dentists. Root canals aim to save the tooth by removing infected pulp and restoring its function. However, there are instances where tooth extraction may be necessary. It is important to consult your dentist to determine the best course of action based on your unique situation.

Can a root canal be done in one visit?

Yes a root canal can be done in single visit. Typically, a root canal procedure requires one or two visits. The duration of each visit can vary, ranging from 30 to 90 minutes on average. The number of visits required for your specific root canal treatment will be determined by your dentist. They will evaluate your condition and provide you with a personalized treatment plan, taking into account the complexity of the procedure and your individual needs. If your tooth requires a dental crown, this step may take an additional 60 minutes. In such cases, another appointment is usually scheduled to ensure your tooth has fully healed before the crown is permanently placed. How long do root canals last?

Root canals have a very high success rate and can last a lifetime with proper care. However, it’s important to understand that the longevity of a root canal depends on several factors, including the patient’s oral hygiene habits, regular dental check-ups, and the restoration placed on the treated tooth (dental fillings or dental crown). Same as other healthy teeth in your mouth, good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups will protect root canal tooth. In some cases, a dental crown or other restoration may be recommended after a root canal to provide additional protection and support to the treated tooth. A study showed that the tooth with restorative work normally last longer.

How painful is a root canal?

Contrary to common misconceptions, modern root canal procedures are typically performed under local anesthesia and are normally painless. The purpose of a root canal is to reduce the pain caused by an infected or inflamed tooth pulp, rather than causing pain.

What happens if you skip a root canal?

Delaying or skipping a recommended root canal treatment can lead to persistent pain, abscess formation, spread of infection, and potential systemic health issues. It is important to address dental issues promptly to prevent further complications and alleviate discomfort. It is important to communicate openly with your dentist about any concerns or anxiety you may have. They can provide additional measures, such as sedation or relaxation techniques, to help you feel more comfortable during the root canal procedure.
