How long does a dental implant procedure take?
The duration of a dental implant procedure can vary depending on several factors, including the patient’s individual case and treatment plan. While the actual implant placement itself typically takes around 30 minutes, it’s important to note that the overall process may span several months and involve multiple appointments.

What are my options if my dental implant fails?
If a dental implant fails, the dentist will remove the failed implant, which can be done under local anesthesia. Then the area will be carefully cleaned. If the surrounding bone is still intact and healthy, a bone graft may not be necessary.
After the area has healed, a new dental implant can be placed. The specific treatment plan will depend on the individual case and will be discussed with your dentist.
What is the most common cause of dental implant failure?
Dental implants can fail due to various reasons, including infection, bone loss, implant fracture, malposition, overheating, contamination, slow healing, and certain medical conditions. These factors can interfere with the osseointegration process, which is crucial for the implant’s success.
The risk of dental implant failure is increased in individuals with specific medical conditions, peri-implantitis (infection at the implant site), and surgical complications.
Additionally, factors such as gum disease, smoking, inadequate jaw bone, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and poor dental maintenance can impact the success of dental implants.
To prevent dental implant failure, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene, see a qualified dentist, and follow the post-operative instructions provided by your dentist. Regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings are also essential for monitoring the health of the implants and addressing any potential issues early on.
What is the best age for dental implants?
In general, dental implants are commonly placed in adults who have reached skeletal maturity, which is typically over the age of 18. The most important factors to determine the suitability for dental implants include having sufficient bone volume and density in the jaw to support the implant, good oral hygiene, and overall health conditions. It is advisable to consult with a qualified dentist who can evaluate your specific case and determine if dental implants are a suitable option for you, regardless of your age.
General Dental Implants Melbourne FAQ
Dental implant restorations offer effective solutions for replacing missing teeth, and there are four main types to consider. These include single tooth implants, implant-supported dentures, full mouth acrylic (PMMA), and full arch dental implants. For more information, please consult with a dentist.
Simple Tooth Implants
These implants replace individual missing teeth with a natural-looking prosthetic tooth anchored to an implant.
Implant-supported dentures
Dentures are securely anchored by multiple implants, providing stability and improved chewing ability.
Full mouth Acrylic (PMMA)
A removable full arch prosthesis made of acrylic material, supported by dental implants.
Full arch dental implants
This comprehensive solution replaces an entire arch of missing teeth with a fixed implant-supported bridge.
How much do dental implants cost? The cost of dental implants can vary, but it typically starts from $2,000 per implant, which covers the placement of the implant fixture. It’s important to note that this cost does not include the restoration, such as a crown or post/crown, that is placed on top of the implant. During your consultation with the dentist, they will explain any additional costs associated with bone grafting or provisionalization that may be required in your specific case.
Additional costs may include the price of a crown, which is approximately $1,500 per crown. This cost covers the preparation, molding, milling (crown manufacture), and placement of the crown. Depending on your situation, there may be additional services required, and your dentist will provide a clear outline of these costs before proceeding with any treatments.
Various factors can influence the overall cost of dental implants, such as the number of teeth you wish to replace and whether procedures like bone grafting or sinus lifts are necessary.
Here is a breakdown of services typically involved in a tooth implant procedure:
- Examination and Xrays
- Removal of an existing tooth, if applicable
- Temporary crown
- Temporary abutment
- (Permanent) Implant abutment
- Full crown to the implant
Please keep in mind that the information provided is a general guide for dental implants price in Melbourne. Your individual situation should be discussed with your dentist in greater detail.
Teeth implants are generally more expensive than dentures due to several factors:
Complexity: Dental implants involve more complex procedure compared to dentures. Implants require a surgical procedure for the placement of the implant fixture into the jawbone, which adds to the overall cost.
Materials: The components used in dental implants, such as the implant fixture and abutment, are made with high-quality materials and manufactured to precise standards. These contribute to the higher cost of implants.
Functionality: Dental implants are designed to be a more permanent solution for missing teeth replacement. They are inserted directly into the jaw bone, providing stability and functionality similar to natural teeth. In contrast, dentures are removable and rest on the gum surface, which may not offer the same level of comfort and functionality.
Additional Procedures: In some cases, dental implants may require additional procedures such as bone grafting or sinus lifts to ensure a stable foundation for the implant. These minor surgical procedures can increase the overall cost compared to dentures, which typically do not require such extra treatments.
It’s important to consider that while dental implants may have a higher upfront cost, they offer long-term benefits. Each patient’s dental needs and preferences are different, so it’s recommended to consult with your dentist to determine the best option for you.

REPLACE MISSING TEETH
Tooth implant procedure
A closer look at the typical steps for placing a new implant and crown
The following outlines the key steps to a typical tooth implant procedure. These steps are carried out over a period of time.
Your clinical situation is examined and an image of your jawbone is taken to determine the placement of the dental implant(s). An impression is made that serves as “guide” for the entire treatment.
The dental implant(s) and a temporary prosthesis are put in place.
A healing cap/ cover screw is put in place.
Following the surgical procedure, there is a period of healing before your final new teeth are attached.
This period allows the dental implant(s) to fully integrate into your jawbone and may be between 3-6 months.
Following the appropriate healing period, you return to your dentist. An impression is taken for the final crown. Your dentist uses the new impression to craft your new tooth/teeth, matching the colour and shape of your natural teeth. The impressions are sent to the lab.
The lab constructs the crown on the abutment and then sends it to MC Dental.
You return to MC Dental to have your dentist screw the crown and attached abutment into the implant, followed by aesthetics checks to make sure you are satisfied with the result.
